The Highway Code

When it was first launched in 1931 there were just 2.3 million motor vehicles in Great Britain, yet over 7,000 people were killed in road accidents each year. Today there are more than 27 million vehicles on our roads but only half the number of road deaths. This reduction in road deaths is thanks to greater public awareness, advances in technology and the introduction of British Summertime as well as the introduction of the Highway Code, and driving regulations.

The Code applies to all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders. Many of the rules are legal requirements, so it is important to learn the information contained in the Highway Code and to remember it. If these rules are disobeyed a criminal offence may be committed. This can result in fines, penalty points on driving licenses or even disqualification from driving. In the most serious cases a driver may be sent to prison.
